Pakistan has sent its first consignment of cherries to China, marking a significant milestone in the country’s agricultural exports. The consignment, weighing 6 tons, was dispatched from Gilgit-Baltistan and is expected to be the first of several shipments to China this year. The export is made possible by a phytosanitary agreement signed between Pakistan and China in 2022, which granted China market access to Pakistan for the export of fresh cherries.
The agreement is expected to boost the local cherry industry, with over 100 cherry orchards and a cold storage and packing house registered with the General Administration of Chinese Customs. The region produces approximately 5,000 tons of cherries per season, and the newfound access to the Chinese market is expected to significantly boost this production as more farmers adopt advanced agricultural practices and improve their farming techniques to meet the high demand.
