Brazilian farmers have clashed with the government over the authorization to import rice, citing concerns that it could destabilize the domestic rice production chain and harm local farmers. The Brazilian Agriculture and Livestock Confederation (CNA) has filed a lawsuit against the federal government’s decision to allow up to one million tons of rice to be imported into the country.

The CNA argues that importing rice could lead to price instability and harm local farmers, who are already struggling due to the extraordinary floods in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the main rice producer. The lawsuit also questions the constitutionality of rice imports, which are outlined in several government decrees and resolutions. The CNA claims that 84% of the rice planted in Rio Grande do Sul had been harvested before the floods and that there is no real risk of a shortage. The organization is seeking to suspend the National Supply Company’s (Conab) public auction for purchasing imported rice and is calling for the government to engage more with the productive sector before making such decisions.
