China follows Indonesia with an export value of 166.9 million dollars accounting for 13 percent of global charcoal exports.

The third-largest exporter of charcoal in the world is Poland. Poland is responsible for 6.5 percent of global charcoal exports valued at 83.8 million dollars.

Top 10 Charcoal Exporting Countries

 

Before talking about the top exporting countries, let us talk about countries with the highest consumption rate as

The countries with the highest volumes of wood charcoal consumption are Brazil with 5.5M tonnes, Ethiopia with 4.4M tonnes, and Nigeria with 4.2M tonnes, together accounting for 28 percent of global consumption.

Other countries like India, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Tanzania, China, Thailand, Madagascar, Egypt, and Zambia altogether account for 33 percent of global consumption.

In value terms, the largest wood charcoal markets worldwide are Brazil with 2.5 Billion Dollars, Ethiopia with 2.2 Billion Dollars, and Zambia with 2 Billion Dollars altogether making a combined 27 percent share of the global market.

Globally, wood charcoal exports by country totaled about 1.29 billion dollars in 2020. That dollar amount reflects a 28.2 percent increase for all charcoal shippers over a five-year period starting in 2015 when exported charcoal was worth 1 billion dollars. However, the value of exported charcoal fell by -0.2 percent from 2018 to 2019.

Light gray in color, charcoal results from the slow heating of wood or other combustible substances in an oxygen-less environment. This process contrasts with the millions of years involved for coal, a black natural mineral and fossil fuel formed under the earth’s crust under high temperature and intense pressure.

Other differences are that charcoal produces more heat and is a cleaner fuel than coal. In addition to generating energy and producing heat for cooking, black powder from charcoal is used in creating purification filters as well as producing fireworks.

In 2020, suppliers in Asia sold the highest dollar worth of exported charcoal with shipments valued at 690.6 million dollars which is more than half of the global sales total.

European exporters sold at 27.9 percent of the global export figures while 8.9 percent of worldwide charcoal shipments originated from Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

A very small percentage of 6.5 came from Africa. North America sold 3 percent while 0.02 percent came from Oceania.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing charcoal exporters since 2015 are Myanmar with up to 6531.3 percent increase, Laos with up to 831.7 percent, India with up to 213.3 percent, and Ukraine with up to 113.7 percent.

However, three major suppliers posted a decrease in their exported charcoal sales the Philippines declined by -35.3 percent, Belgium declined by -22.8 percent, and Cuba decrease by -6.9 percent.

Vietnam is the fifth largest exporter of charcoal with 68.3 million dollars in export value which stands at 5.3 percent.

Namibia is next with an average export value of 45.8 million dollars. Namibia is responsible for 3.6 percent of global charcoal export.

Myanmar sits at number 7 exporting 44.3 million dollars value of charcoal (3.4%)

The Philippines exports 3.4 percent of total charcoal export valued at 43.9 million dollars.

Cuba's export value is 43.6 million dollars

The Netherlands is the 10th highest exporter of charcoal averagely generating 40.1 million dollars annually from charcoal export which accounts for 3.1 percent of global export.

Laos is next with 36.8 million dollars in export value which amounts to 2.9 percent

Paraguay closely follows Laos with an export value of 35.8 million dollars

Belgium is responsible for 2.3 percent of global charcoal export valued at 29.7 million dollars

India's charcoal export is valued at 29.1 million dollars making them contribute 2.3 percent to global charcoal export.

Malaysia is the fifteenth largest exporter of charcoal with an export value of 28.8 million dollars.
