The imports of processed tomatoes from Ukraine to the EU saw a significant increase of 17 percent in 2017, as compared to 2016, due to being a competitive market, and due to a sharp decrease in imports from China.

Ukraine's exports to the European Union of processed tomatoes will continue growing, rising by 15 percent in 2018, from 2017. European Union imports of fresh tomatoes saw an 8 percent increase supported by the 42 percent growth in imports from Turkey in 2017, as compared to the previous year.

Only around one-fifth of the tomatoes produced globally are processed with the majority of them being consumed fresh. Processed tomatoes find their maximum application in sauces, which accounts for nearly 30 percent of their total global application.

In 2018, about 12 million tons of sauces were consumed globally. Pastes are another application segment that dominated the market.

The global tomato processing market is being driven by the extensive applications of processed tomatoes in sectors like household, food processing, and snack foods. They are also used widely in the foodservice industry in hotels, restaurants, and fast food retail chains.

With the fast-food industry thriving globally, the market is being propelled forward. The growing organized retail sector is also providing further impetus to market growth. The additional health benefits of processed tomatoes along with their longer shelf life are driving their demand.

Based on a comparison of 154 countries in 2013, China ranked the highest in tomato consumption per capita with 43,121,765 kg followed by India and the USA. On the other end of the scale was Hong Kong with 3.00 kg, Taiwan with 5.40 kg, and Macao with 5.70 kg.

Total tomato consumption per capita reached 144,085,954 kg in 2013 in the World according to Faostat. This is 1.59 percent more than in the previous year and 27.6 percent more than 10 years ago.

Historically, total tomato consumption per capita reached an all-time high of 144,085,954 kg in 2013 and an all-time low of 24,138,961 kg in 1961. The average annual growth amounted to 3.50 percent since 1961.

The top-ranked country, China, accounted for 29.9 percent of tomato consumption per capita in the world. The top 3 countries hold a 49.6 percent share while the ten largest countries some 71.1 percent in 2013.

Global purchases of imported tomatoes cost an estimated 9.63 billion dollars in 2020.

Overall, the value of tomatoes imported in 2020 increased by 9.7 percent for all importing countries since 2016 when tomatoes purchases were valued at 8.78 billion dollars. Year over year, the total cost for imported tomatoes expanded by 6.1 percent from 2019 to 2020.

The biggest international markets which are the United States, Germany, France, United Kingdom, and Russia bought almost two-thirds or 65.7 percent worth of imported fresh or chilled tomatoes in 2020.

From a continental perspective, buyers located in European countries bought the highest dollar worth of imported tomatoes in 2020 with purchases valued at 5.8 billion dollars, or 60 percent of the global total. In second place were North American importers at 33.6 percent while 5.7 percent of tomatoes imported worldwide were delivered to customers in Asia.

Tinier percentages of 0.34 percent arrived in Africa, Latin America got 0.32 percent excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, and Oceania got 0.02 percent led by Australia.

Among the top 15 importing countries, the fastest-growing markets for tomatoes from 2019 to 2020 were: Saudi Arabia which was up by 46 percent, the United States up by 20.6 percent, Switzerland up by 15.5 percent, and Poland up by 9.8 percent.

Four countries posted declines in their imported tomatoes purchases namely Russia was down by minus 17.5 percent, Italy was down by minus 14.6 percent, the Czech Republic was down by minus 5.6 percent, and the United Kingdom down by 4 percent.

Top Tomato Exporting Countries:

Global sales for tomatoes exported by all countries totaled an estimated 9.8 billion dollars for 2020. Overall, the value of exported tomatoes increased by an average of 12.9 percent for all shipping countries since 2016 when tomato shipments were valued at 8.7 billion dollars.

Year over year, globally exported tomatoes appreciated by 7.2 percent from 2019 to 2020.

The world’s 5 biggest exporters of tomatoes are Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, Morocco, and Canada, these five countries generated over two-thirds or 69.3 percent of all tomatoes sold on international markets in 2020.

At the continent level, European countries sold the highest value of exported tomatoes in 2020 with shipments amounting to 4.3 billion dollars or 43.7 percent of worldwide exports. North American exporters were responsible for 34.3 percent worth, while Asian suppliers supplied a 12.1 percent share trailed by African providers at 9.2 percent.

Tinier percentages of 0.7 percent originated from Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, and Oceania with 0.1 percent led by New Zealand and Australia.

Among the top 15 exporters of tomatoes, the fastest-growing sellers of tomatoes on global markets from 2019 to 2020 were: China up by 36.9 percent, Canada up by 20.8 percent, Mexico up by 20.5 percent, and France up 1by 6.5 percent.

Those countries that posted declines in their exported tomatoes sales were led by: Jordan which was down by minus 44.9 percent, Poland was down by 4.2 percent, Uzbekistan was down by 3.6 percent, Morocco was down by minus 2.2 percent and Italy was down by minus 0.7 percent.
