Bos Smoked Fish Inc. has been fined $25,000 by the Ontario Court of Justice for illegally importing 662 kilograms of protected European eel meat from the Netherlands in April 2023 without the required CITES permits[1][3][4][5].

The company pleaded guilty to violating the Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trade Act[1][3][4]. In addition to the fine, which will go to the Environmental Damages Fund, the illegally imported eel meat was ordered to be forfeited[1][3][4]. The European eel is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN and regulated under CITES Appendix II due to the risk of extinction from unsustainable trade[3][4].
