Starting on August 1, 2024, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will implement new requirements for dogs entering the United States. All dogs must appear healthy upon arrival, be at least 6 months old, be microchipped, and be accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form online submission receipt.[3][4]
Additional requirements will depend on where the dog has been in the 6 months prior to entry and whether the dog was vaccinated against rabies in the U.S. or elsewhere.[2][3][4] For dogs arriving from countries with a high risk of dog rabies, they must be protected against rabies.[3][4]
These new regulations aim to protect the health and safety of people and animals by ensuring imported dogs do not pose a risk of introducing diseases, such as the dog rabies variant that was eliminated in the U.S. in 2007.[3][4] Travelers are advised to plan ahead and obtain all necessary documentation before their dog’s arrival in the United States.[3][5]
