The Eldoret-Kampala oil pipeline project will revert all oil exports from the Great Lakes region back to Uganda, according to petroleum consultant George Wachira. Prior to the collapse of the East African Community in 1977, all oil exports to countries like Rwanda, DRC, and South Sudan were handled through Ugandan oil companies and depots in Kampala.

The new pipeline extension agreed by the presidents of Kenya and Uganda will shift these oil exports back to Kampala, compelling Kenyan oil companies to surrender their regional export business to Ugandan firms like the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC).
