The Puntland state government in northeastern Somalia has banned the use, trade, and importation of plastic bags with immediate effect. [1][2][3] This decisive action is part of the state’s efforts to combat plastic pollution and protect the environment.

The ban, legislated under the directives of H.E Amb Khadija Mohamed Makhzumi, the Minister of Environment & Climate Change, aims to safeguard the environment for future generations. [4] The ministry has urged all businesses and citizens to comply with the ban and encouraged the use of environmentally friendly alternatives. [4]

The move aligns with regional efforts and adheres to the standards set by the East African Community (EAC) on environmental protection. [4] Somalia joins a growing number of nations taking firm action against the use of lightweight single-use plastic bags, which are known for their persistent environmental footprint and threat to marine life. [4]

The ministry will be working closely with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition away from plastic bags, and public awareness campaigns and educational programs will be rolled out to support this significant environmental policy change. [4]
