The local auto industry has urged the government to regulate the influx of illegal used car imports, which are negatively impacting the sales of locally assembled vehicles. Industry stakeholders have been actively engaging with relevant ministries and the Prime Minister to build a strong case against the thriving used car imports and their adverse effects on the local auto industry, vendors, and employment.

The average monthly import of used cars has reached 30,679 units during the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, compared to 4,701 units in the previous year. This surge in used car imports has hit the sales of locally assembled vehicles, according to the industry. The local auto industry has urged the government to completely stop the illegal arrival of used cars, as they believe this has not created any jobs in the country and instead threatened jobs in the manufacturing sector.

The industry has also raised concerns about the illegal financial channels used to make payments for used car imports, which facilitate illegal foreign exchange transfers. In contrast, the local auto industry uses the legal route for importing all parts into the country. The industry is hopeful that the government will impose various import restrictions on second-hand cars in the upcoming budget to revive the ailing sales of locally assembled vehicles.
