China has lifted its import bans on five major Australian beef producers, marking a significant step in mending trade ties between the two nations. China had imposed the bans in 2020 and 2022, citing concerns over labeling, contamination, and COVID-19 cases among workers at the affected facilities. Six out of ten Australian abattoirs that were previously affected by the restrictions have had their bans lifted, with two facilities still facing import bans.

The decision is seen as a positive development for the strained Australia-China relationship, which has been improving since the change of government in Canberra two years ago. Australian Agriculture Minister Murray Watt attributed the progress to efforts made to mend diplomatic ties with China, stating that the move is “fantastic news for our cattle producers, the meat processing industry, and the workers in these industries.”
