According to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), over 70% of food exports from Nigeria are rejected in international markets. NAFDAC Director General Mojisola Adeyeye stated that the deplorable state of the export trade facilitation process for regulated products leaving the country has continued to be a serious cause for concern.

Adeyeye attributed this high rejection rate to non-compliance with NAFDAC’s advisory guidelines and the unwillingness of exporters to comply with minimal sanitary measures required for exports. She noted that almost all exported food products are processed without the statutory testing and certification by NAFDAC, leading to the rejection of these non-compliant exports by trading partners. NAFDAC has now taken a firm stance, declaring that no patriot should export any NAFDAC-regulated product without it passing through the agency and being certified for safety and quality, in full compliance with destination country requirements.
