Before we delve into the topic which is the top coffee exporting countries, let's take a sneak look at the top coffee-producing countries.

Like we have said in previous posts where we talked about the top exporting countries, local production does not equate to exportation capacity.

The top coffee exporting countries are:

  • Brazil
  • Switzerland
  • Germany
  • Columbia
  • Vietnam
  • Italy
  • France
  • Honduras
  • Netherlands
  • United States

As of 2019, the total production of the commodity was valued at 5.60 Million Metric tonnes.

The biggest producer of the commodity is Brazil. The Latin American country has been the highest producing country for coffee for over 150 years with 27,000 square km of land dedicated to its growth.

Vietnam is another powerhouse when it comes to local coffee production.

Columbia is a renowned name when it comes to coffee production which makes them the third-largest producer of the commodity.

Indonesia's location and climate have helped it become the fourth-largest producer of coffee in the world. Total production, including robusta and arabica, was 10.7 million 60 kilogram bags between 2019 to 2020.

Ethiopia is the fifth largest coffee producer in the world and the largest producer of the commodity in Africa between 2019 to 2020, Ethiopia exported a record amount of 7.3 million 60 kilogram bags of coffee.

Now let's take a look at the top exporting countries of the commodity.

The Coffee export market was valued at 27.40 billion dollars as of 2020 with Brazil dominating the market in terms of export turnover.

Brazil is the largest exporter of commodities. The Latin American nation is responsible for 14 percent of the global coffee exportation valued at over 3.84 billion dollars.

The global demand for coffee heavily contributed to the early phase of Brazil's modern economic expansion and industrialization. Brazil currently exports the majority of its coffee to the United States and Germany. The United States is the world’s largest single buyer of coffee

The second highest exporter of coffee in Switzerland with a 10.43 percent stake in the coffee export market valued at 2.86 billion dollars.

Germany follows Switzerland with a 2.61 Billion dollars export value of the commodity claiming 9.54 percent of the export market share.

We have Columbia as the fourth-highest exporter of coffee with an export value of 2.36 billion dollars. Columbia controls 8.6 percent of the coffee export market.

The fifth highest exporter of the commodity is Vietnam with 1.74 billion dollars in export earnings making them have a 6.35 percent share of the coffee export market.

Italy follows Vietnam by exporting 6.2 percent of the world's total coffee export valued at 1.70 billion dollars.

France is ranked the seventh highest exporter of the commodity with a market share of 4.22 percent valued at 1,16 billion dollars.

Honduras rakes in an average of 866. 27 million dollars annually from the export of the commodity which is equivalent to 3.19 percent of the total global exportation of the commodity.

The Netherlands is ranked ninth in terms of the top coffee exporting country. The Dutch country exports 2.97 percent of total world exportation valued at 814.14 million dollars.

The United States is the tenth highest exporter of the commodity with an annual net export of 2.87 percent valued at 786.46 million dollars.
